Ikorodu City Football Academy has achieved a remarkable milestone in Lagos football after emerging champions of the Lagos Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO League One) and securing the state’s only promotion ticket to the Nigeria National League (NNL).
The academy side completed a successful campaign after overcoming a highly competitive Lagos NLO structure that featured more than 60 teams divided into eight groups during the regular season.

The journey to the title was filled with intense battles, as teams across the different Lagos centres fought for qualification to the final playoff stage. After the conclusion of the group phase and qualification playoffs, four teams earned the opportunity to compete for the ultimate prize.
Ablaze FC, Franceex United, Hephzibah Sports Club and Ikorodu City FA emerged as the final contenders and travelled to Moshood Kashimawo Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State, for a decisive round robin tournament to determine the overall Lagos NLO champion.
Ikorodu City FA entered the final stage with confidence and determination, knowing that only one team would secure the highly coveted Lagos State ticket to the NNL.
The Abeokuta playoff tournament produced exciting football, with all four teams battling for every point. At the end of the competition, Ikorodu City FA finished top of the standings with seven points to claim the championship.
However, the title race went down to the finest margins as Hephzibah SC also finished with seven points. The deciding factor was goal difference, with Ikorodu City FA scoring one goal more than their rivals to secure first place and the promotion ticket.
The final standings saw Franceex United finish third with three points, while Ablaze FC ended the tournament without a point.
The final match of the tournament was the clash between Hephzibah SC and Ikorodu City FA, which ended in a 1-1 draw after an entertaining encounter in Abeokuta.
Ikorodu City FA made a dream start, taking the lead just two minutes into the match. Chika Okonkwor rose highest to head the ball into the net and give his team an early advantage.
The response from Hephzibah SC was immediate. Just three minutes later, Idowu Nazif restored parity with a well-taken goal to make it 1 1.
Both teams continued to compete fiercely, creating chances and showing why they had reached the final stage of the Lagos NLO competition. Despite the efforts from both sides, neither team could find a winning goal as the match ended in a draw.
The result proved valuable for Ikorodu City FA, who maintained their position at the top of the table and eventually clinched the sole NNL ticket.
The achievement represents another important chapter in the growth of Ikorodu City’s football project. While the senior Ikorodu City team continues its journey in the Nigeria Premier Football League, the academy has now secured promotion to the second tier of Nigerian football, the Nigeria National League.
The development has created an exciting possibility for the Ikorodu City football family, with the senior team competing in the top flight and the academy side moving into the NNL.
Whether both teams will eventually compete in the first and second tiers of Nigerian football remains a story that time will reveal, but the progress highlights the strength of Ikorodu City’s football development structure.
